Defending the IPL title is one of cricket's hardest challenges. Across 18 seasons, only two franchises have managed to win back-to-back IPL titles. Chennai Super Kings were the first, winning in 2010 and retaining the crown in 2011 under MS Dhoni — the only team to do so before the 10-year mark. Mumbai Indians replicated the feat in 2019 and 2020 under Rohit Sharma, with the second title coming in the UAE edition held during the COVID-19 pandemic. No other team has successfully defended an IPL title. Several teams including Gujarat Titans (lost 2023 final after winning 2022), KKR (defending in 2025 after 2024 win), and RCB (defending in 2026 after 2025 win) have attempted but failed or are yet to attempt their defence.
