7 itemsUpdated Mar 25, 2026

Bowling economically in the IPL powerplay (overs 1-6) is one of cricket's most demanding challenges. With only two fielders permitted outside the 30-yard circle, aggressive T20 batters target boundaries freely and the pitch is freshest — making every extra wide or short ball expensive. Bhuvneshwar Kumar holds the record for most powerplay wickets in IPL history (79) and also has the best powerplay economy rate (6.46) among all bowlers with 50+ powerplay wickets. Zaheer Khan (6.74) and Sandeep Sharma (6.97) are the only other bowlers with sub-7 powerplay economy among those with 50+ powerplay wickets. Sunil Narine's mystery spin in the powerplay produced an economy of approximately 5.47 in his best seasons (2012 and 2014 for KKR) but with lower overall powerplay over counts. Rashid Khan's best powerplay economy at GT was approximately 5.50, giving him the best rate in the modern era.
