The inaugural Backlash on April 25, 1999 at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island was the WWF's first post-WrestleMania monthly PPV after the discontinuation of the In Your House series. The event was originally advertised as 'Backlash: In Your House' before the In Your House branding was dropped. Steve Austin retained the WWF Championship over The Rock in a No Holds Barred rematch from WM15 with Vince McMahon as special referee — Shane McMahon had announced the No Holds Barred stipulation and Vince made the reluctant count. Attendance: 10,939 (sell-out).
