The Dream Match That Never Happened at WrestleMania

The original main event of WrestleMania VIII was supposed to be the long-awaited singles match between WWF Champion Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan — the meeting of the two greatest champions of their respective eras. WWF President Jack Tunney announced Hogan as the number-one contender on January 25, 1992, and the match was promoted on television. Both men had house show matches against each other and a televised tag match. However, multiple factors combined to kill the dream: the house show matches were reportedly disappointing; concerns about Hogan being cheered over Flair at WrestleMania given Flair's NWA/WCW fanbase; and the emerging steroid scandal requiring Hogan to take a leave of absence. The match was restructured into a double main event with Flair vs. Savage and Hogan vs. Sid.

The Production Failure That Created One of WM's Worst Finishes

The original plan for the Hogan vs. Sid main event finish involved Hogan hitting the leg drop on Sid Justice and Papa Shango running in to break up the pin, causing a disqualification. Papa Shango — whose real name was Charles Wright, later known as The Godfather — missed his cue and was late arriving at ringside. Sid, lying under the leg drop, was forced to improvise: rather than play dead for the pin, he kicked out. From there, Sid and the referee were unsure how to proceed. Harvey Wippleman eventually jumped in to provide the disqualification, followed by Shango finally arriving for the post-match beat-down. The confusion was visibly apparent on camera and remains one of the most notoriously bungled WrestleMania main event endings.

Unconfirmed Reports That Sid's Kick-Out Was a Deliberate Shoot

Multiple sources have reported that Sid Justice's kick-out of Hogan's leg drop — rather than playing dead for the pin while waiting for Shango — was a deliberate double-cross: Sid refusing to do the job and selling the leg drop as a finisher. This has never been officially confirmed by anyone involved and remains one of professional wrestling's most enduring unresolved controversies. If accurate, it would mean that the most chaotic WrestleMania main event finish was created by a combination of Shango missing his cue AND Sid refusing to play his scripted role.

Flair Fined for Blade Job Caught on Camera

Nature Boy's Blading Visible Directly to Cameras — Unprecedented Fine

During the Flair vs. Savage WWF Championship match, Ric Flair performed a blade job — deliberately cutting himself with a small razor blade to produce blood — directly in front of the camera. The unobscured, on-camera visibility of the blade was unprecedented in WWF's increasingly television-friendly era, and Flair was subsequently fined several thousand dollars by WWF management for the infraction. The blade job added to the visual drama of the match but cost Flair financially.

Shane McMahon — son of Vince McMahon and future WWE Chairman — appeared at WrestleMania VIII as one of the backstage WWF officials attempting to physically prevent Miss Elizabeth from reaching ringside during the Flair vs. Savage championship match. Shane was in his early twenties and working in behind-the-scenes roles in the WWF at the time. His WM8 appearance is one of his earliest documented on-camera WWF presences.

A taped interview with Lex Luger aired during WrestleMania VIII — promoting the World Bodybuilding Federation, Vince McMahon's ill-fated foray into professional bodybuilding competition. Bobby Heenan used the airing to introduce Luger's physique to the WWF audience, foreshadowing a future WWF run that would materialise in 1993 with Luger's helicopter arrival at WrestleMania IX. The WBF was dissolved in 1992 after producing only one televised event.
